City Life: Youth Culture and the Alternative Economy

There are cities around the world which are most desireable to live in by most individuals who have a great sense of ambition, inspiration and energy to live the modern day lifestyle. Such cities are thriving cosmopolitan areas which large populations usually riding into the millions. Such cities are mostly world capitals of finance, development, entertainment and industrial productive activities. They are usually characterised by large skyscrapers, complex road infrastructure, intricate and advanced transport systems which range from bus, rail, car and boats. Such cities are usually built around coastlines and large river systems and have been on a constant growth curve for hundreds of years, they are the pinnacle of human civilisation and are the point of expression of human ingenuity and great technological innovation.

The cities which I am describing here and commonly known as first world cities such as: London, New York, Tokyo, Shanghai, Los Angeles, Cape Town, Berlin, Melbourne and Sydney just to name a few. Almost any mordenised human being anywhere on the planet knows about these cities and most of the young people of today desire to live and earn in these cities , as they are a representation of the advancement of our world, characterised by high standards of living such as cleanliness, personal security, good housing, clean water and sewage systems and high earning potential as well as super wealthy inidviduals who live a life of opulence which serve as an inspiration for most individuals to model their lives after. Most developing countries model their development and infrastructural aspirations after such cities as they serve as the flag pole for the direction of development for most of the towns and cities in countries which are not as developed and have individuals struggling to make decent living and housing infrastructure for which they could live and work in. These cities are not really about the developments which they have embarked on but rather what the developments allow their citizens of these cities to do, because really at the end of the day it is about human activity in each of these locations and the energy which fuels these activities.

The activities of these locations are different in much the way that they are the same, and that is what makes them both unique and still recognisable because they share models and systems of operation which almost any well educated human being can relate to. These systems serve as the foundation for education of young individuals if they are to be integrated into the societies and communities of these locations as they are what feeds the development and maintenance of these places; which is what has allowed them to be sustained for hundreds of years. Cities serve as places of learning and human development because they inevitably have very complex and rich experiences which can allow any discerning young individual to learn and grow from. Learning can take place through formal education or through experience and most individuals are free to choose the path they wish to pursue through subjects like economics and commerce, which are really ways to describe both linguistically and mathematically the activities of groups of individuals and companies which are all in the service of human development. Cities feed from the energy and aspiration of young individuals and they as well may feed from it in their later years as “adults” which serve as the basis of action and expression for a lot of people around the world irregardless of whether they live in cities or not, which is really what allows them to express their individual freedom. As a result a culture has developed in all these cities, a culture united by the individual thoughts and aspiration, which is free of time and location, a culture which has no rules and regulations but is rather guided by the humanness and desires of each individual who strives to express their individuality, because in some manner it may add to the total and united expression of city culture and the ultimate human expression.

The Need for Individual Expression and the Place of Youth Culture

Given the advancement of cities and its associated societies, the moral basis of behaviour and rule of law has fundamentally changed the way people view themselves as a function of a basic human. This has been the requirement to build out these large cities and infrastructure and it has required high levels of discipline and hard work as well as the structural support of governmental laws. As a result this has created a polarisation in the way people feel they need to express themselves, and has largely lead to a division between highly focused, formal, and politically correct and stringent forms of self expression versus the care-free, seemingly unfocused and a frivolous method of self expression, which has come to be largely understood as youth culture.

These methods of expression have been divided through a mindset which has set out to understand the nature of technological development and industrialisation as opposed to a mindset which seeks something which is rather un-quantifiable, as a result law, and institutional establishments which govern these cities have seen it befitting to suppress this latter mode of expression as it runs counter to the aims of the cities or towns in which such individuals find themselves sprawled in. This is born out of facts of ignorance which have a limited understanding of human nature and the need for individual expression and a varation in experience which give a flavour to human societies and hence cities.

This division has to be reconciled in order to avoid the conflict which arises out of these two observations and so far the mind which has been able to do so is a type of mind which is free of conflict and the conditioning of past experiences. So far the untouched mind of the youth which is still learning and discovering the world has been able to reconcile these two methods of expression and has been able to see necessity in maintaining a balance between them, as a healthier method of existence and expression. The carefree mind is not necessarily that of the unintelligent individual, and we are still yet to discover the intelligence embedded in it, but so far the evidence of its manifestation is slowly becoming apparent. This has shown in areas such as music, fashion, food, dance, art, and literature, and this has allowed for an explosion in creativity in the minds of the young today. It is fairly evident that the mindset of youth culture is highly creative and non-conforming and non-binding to the individuals who are caught up in its expression. It has resulted in patterns of thought which are largely counter intuitive to most institutional and organisational goals, and these demand a different level of attention and awareness of the environment as well as a different level of activity.

How Economies have benefited from an Alternate Economy

Most developed cities operate under metrics which serve as a feedback system for the way it is functioning. These very methods of self regulation and advancement can become very limited in that the individuals who are embedded in it can have one-track minds which do not operate outside of its known area of existence, or rather have a difficult time doing so. As a result many years of economic and social development eventually hit a wall after a certain period of time, there is no impelling narrative which operates outside of these known domains to guide the actions of individuals as a result, most will find themselves caught up in a malaise of problems which become the very impediment to the operation of the society. If left unfettered to themselves, some of these problems may eventually develop to be destructive and may run counter to what the goals of the society have set out. This is where a different mode of expression finds itself, in an environment which is not accepting of its values, and therefore must be free of the enforcement of these values. This has found itself to largely occur at a time where most people would be asleep and those who wish to express themselves differently would do so, and this is where the night time economy comes in.

Most progressive cities have a very bustling night life, an some cities do not go to sleep and have not gone to sleep in many many years, due to the frantic economic activity which takes place when the sun goes down and the moral rules of conduct seem to have taken a lax attitude. The main activities around the night time economy orbit around the need for self expression without any imposition on the individuals in terms of how and what they should be doing. As a result we find continued creativity in these activities such as food, clothing, music, dance, as well as artistic expression, and these continue to draw the attention of many individuals who seek to both have new and varied experiences or those who wish to express themselves in a manner which is different from the norms of the societal moral code. The result of this has obviously been more human activity which results in thriving economies, a (relatively) happier populace, greater creativity and a higher quality lifestyle.

As a result the relative freedoms which can be enjoyed from a night time economy powered by a disciplined, yet frivolous youth and adult population respectively does result in a greater scope of activity as well as a richer environment to live and experience.
